Artists of Color Show
Connecticut’s cultural institutions have long underrepresented artists of color: a 2019 Hartford‐area study found that “people of color are not proportionately represented in Greater Hartford’s art workforce,” and in 30 major U.S. museums from 2008–2018 only 2.3 percent of acquisitions and 7.7 percent of exhibitions were by Black artists (African Americans comprise roughly 12 percent of the U.S. population). Smaller galleries and museums in Connecticut similarly exhibit predominantly white artists, despite 63% of New Britain’s residents identifying as Black, Latino, Asian, or multiracial.
This juried exhibition addresses that imbalance by spotlighting talented BIPOC painters, sculptors, and photographers from across the state, elevating voices historically missing from Connecticut’s arts institutions. By transforming an equity gap into an opportunity for creative celebration, the show will inspire our youth, draw new audiences, and affirm that the Art League of New Britain serves all of our community.
