Legacy and Emergence: A Community Dialogue
The Art League of New Britain is honored to present an exhibition showcasing significant contributions from artists deeply connected to our community.
In the Lacey Gallery, we pay tribute to the remarkable legacy of Rae Lily Robinson, whose extensive career in art and design included influential roles in advertising, window display, and education. Robinson, a devoted advocate for the arts and founding member of the Art and Craft Association of Southington, leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, notably through her celebrated charcoal portraits of immigrants who settled in Connecticut, displayed at Ellis Island’s Museum of Immigration.
The Stables Gallery features the diverse and evocative sculptural works of Mike Tino, a multi-faceted artist whose practice spans visual art, music, and culinary arts. Tino primarily works with clay, employing atmospheric firing techniques to create thought-provoking sculptures and traditional vessels. His current works explore narrative parallels between mythological creatures and modern cinematic tropes, embodying symbolic imagery inspired by folklore, cinema, and nature.
The Low Gallery presents vibrant, heartfelt works from New Britain High School students, demonstrating emerging artistic talent and fresh perspectives within our community. These young artists bring forward dynamic expressions that reflect their creativity and potential.
We warmly invite visitors to experience this rich exhibition, thoughtfully curated to honor influential legacies, inspire ongoing creativity, and celebrate diverse artistic expressions.

Artists of Color Show
Connecticut’s cultural institutions have long underrepresented artists of color: a 2019 Hartford‐area study found that “people of color are not proportionately represented in Greater Hartford’s art workforce,” and in 30 major U.S. museums from 2008–2018 only 2.3 percent of acquisitions and 7.7 percent of exhibitions were by Black artists (African Americans comprise roughly 12 percent of the U.S. population). Smaller galleries and museums in Connecticut similarly exhibit predominantly white artists, despite 63% of New Britain’s residents identifying as Black, Latino, Asian, or multiracial.
This juried exhibition addresses that imbalance by spotlighting talented BIPOC painters, sculptors, and photographers from across the state, elevating voices historically missing from Connecticut’s arts institutions. By transforming an equity gap into an opportunity for creative celebration, the show will inspire our youth, draw new audiences, and affirm that the Art League of New Britain serves all of our community.
